Yamaha R9 mods & upgrades

The R9 pairs the MT-09's 890 cc CP3 triple with a dedicated aluminum Deltabox chassis, fully adjustable KYB suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes and a six-axis IMU. That leaves little to fix, so the mod list is protection, a tail tidy, tires and setup, then race prep.

1. Protection first

   Fit frame sliders and engine covers. Yamaha sells a genuine slider kit (BKN-F11D0-T0-00), R&G lists Aero and Apex slider kits, and GB Racing lists Bullet Race sliders and secondary engine covers.

2. Tail tidy

   Fit a fender eliminator with flush LED signals. Yoshimura, New Rage Cycles, Graves, TST, R&G, Evotech and Puig all list 2025+ R9 kits.

3. Levers and grips

   Fit shorty or folding levers (Evotech and TST's Womet-Tech list the R9, Hotbodies sells an MGP set) and tank grips from Stompgrip or Graves. Leave the clip-ons alone on the street.

4. Exhaust: budget for a full system

   No slip-on is listed for the 2025–26 R9; Akrapovič, Yoshimura, SC-Project and LeoVince all sell full systems. Akrapovič's EC/ECE-approved Racing Line keeps the cat and pre-muffler and needs no remap.

5. Set up the suspension you already own

   Set sag for your geared weight, then work the preload, rebound and high- and low-speed compression clickers before buying hardware. Springs are the likely purchase for riders far from the design weight.

1. Tires and sag

   Replace the OE Bridgestone Hypersport S22 with trackday DOT rubber in 120/70ZR17 and 180/55ZR17. Set static sag at both ends the same day.

2. Pads, fluid, lever guard

   Yamaha fits Stylema calipers, a Brembo radial master and stainless lines, so add track pads, high-temp fluid and a lever guard (Evotech lists one for the R9).

3. Springs, then valving

   Fit springs for your weight before valving. Graves lists A- and B-spec rear linkage kits and an R1/R6/R9 rear shock shim kit.

4. Make it crashable

   Fit GB Racing engine covers and Bullet Race sliders, race bodywork (Hotbodies lists 2025+ R9 sets), rearsets (Hotbodies MGP) and crash-replaceable clip-ons. Keep the street fairings for the ride home.

5. Full system plus flash, as one purchase

   Akrapovič's track Racing Line has no cat or pre-muffler and requires a remap; Yoshimura also lists a Race AT2. Woolich (plus a YEC variant), 2WDW, TST and SBU flash the R9; TST claims about 5.5% more peak power and a 450 rpm higher limiter with a full system.

6. Gearing

   Stock is 16/43 on a 525 chain (112 links). A tooth off the front or two on the rear shortens the gearing for tight tracks; a 520 conversion needs matching sprockets at both ends.

Yamaha's 2026 and 2027 pages list the same specs and price, so parts listed 2025+ should fit all three years. NHTSA lists no recall for the 2025–26 R9.
