Brake upgrades
Pads, braided lines, and a radial master cylinder — roughly in that order of cost, and close to that order of feel. Rotors and calipers are the deep end for riders who cook the stock hardware.
The short answer
Pads and braided lines fix a mushy lever for under $300 on most bikes. A radial master cylinder (the Brembo RCS is the reference point) changes lever feel more than any caliper swap. Race pads and oversize rotors are for track riders overheating stockers, not for the parking lot.
From budget to premium
Where each brand sits on price and reputation — not an endorsement. They're listed because they make parts for this category.
| Brand | Tier | Origin | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brembo | premium | IT | The premium anchor: RCS Corsa Corta masters, Z04 race pads, T-Drive rotors, folding race levers. |
| Vesrah | premium | JP | SRJL-XX race pads are the endurance-racing pick — priced like it. |
| Galfer | mid | ES | Wave rotors and braided lines — the mid shelf between OEM and full race. In the US the line kits are sold as GBrakes since 2025. |
| Spiegler | mid | DE | German braided lines built to order — the custom-length and custom-color standard. |
| Core Moto | budget | US | Florida-built custom braided lines at budget prices; Apex forged wheels are the value set. |

Brakes by model
What each bike's page says about brakes: the brands that fit, the year splits and the gotchas, quoted from the 40 bike pages that have a note on it.
Honda CBR600RR
The Brembo RCS 19 swap is the canonical RR brake mod, paired with race pads (Vesrah, Brembo Z04 tier) and braided lines. C-ABS bikes (2009+ option) are the exception — line kits and master swaps are limited or unavailable for them.
Kawasaki ZX-6R
The stock Nissin monoblocs wake up with pads and braided lines. A Brembo RCS 19 master cylinder is the racer step — under $500 used with lines, and community consensus calls it the single biggest brake transformation.
Suzuki GSX-R600
The stock master cylinder is the community's named weak point. A Brembo RCS 19 fixes it properly; the budget route is a used late-model R6 master cylinder (community-reported). L1 monobloc pads differ from K8 Tokico pads — listings split at 2011.
Yamaha R6
The R6 master cylinder is good enough that owners of other bikes buy them used as an upgrade. Spend on pads (Vesrah or Z04-tier for track), braided lines and fluid before any hardware.
Aprilia RSV4
Every gen ships serious Brembo hardware — M50s, then Stylemas. Spend on Z04-class pads, lines, fluid and a lever guard. A master-cylinder upgrade only makes sense on earlier gens still running the axial-era feel.
BMW M1000RR
The blue M calipers are Nissin-built and race-capable out of the box. Upgrade path is pads (Z04-class race compounds), fluid and a lever guard, not hardware.
BMW S1000RR
Know your calipers: 2019–22 US bikes run Hayes-built units riders upgrade with pads/lines first; 2023+ and M-package bikes carry the Nissin-built M calipers. A Brembo RCS master cylinder is the usual next step either way.
Ducati Panigale V4
Stylema calipers stock — you upgrade consumables, not hardware. Brembo Z04 pads are the track default; an RCS Corsa Corta master is for feel preference, not necessity. Brake cooling ducts show up once you're racing.
Honda CBR1000RR
Base SC77 runs Tokico radial calipers that transform with pads and lines; SP and RR-R bikes bring Brembo (Stylema on RR-R) and need only consumables. Brembo Z04-class pads for track, EBC HH-class for street.
Kawasaki ZX-10R
2016+ ships with Brembo M50 calipers — pads, braided lines and fluid complete them. 2011–15 Tokico-era bikes gain the most from a Brembo RCS master cylinder and line kit.
Suzuki GSX-R1000
The community's top L7 complaint. Pads (Brembo Z04, Vesrah), braided lines and RBF-grade fluid first; Brembo RCS 19 master cylinder second. On K9–L6 bikes, pad fitment splits at the 2012 monobloc update.
Suzuki GSX-R750
Same known weak point as the 600: the stock master cylinder. Brembo RCS 19 is the proper fix; a used late-model R6 master is the community's budget route (community-reported). Pad fitment splits at 2011 (Brembo monobloc vs earlier Tokico).
Yamaha R1
Stock pads are the known weak link — track pads transform the bike. Brembo RCS19 master cylinder is the canonical hardware upgrade; braided lines and RBF-tier fluid before anything exotic.
Aprilia RS 660
Stock Brembo radial calipers on 320 mm discs are better than the price class suggests — pads, braided lines and fluid are the whole upgrade for most riders.
Ducati Panigale V2
Brembo M4.32 monoblocs and a radial master come stock — this bike needs pads and fluid, not calipers. Z04 pads for track, braided lines if yours are original, and an RCS Corsa Corta master only if you want more adjustability.
Honda CBR500R
2013–2021: one 320 mm disc (petal-style from 2019) with a two-piston caliper. 2022+: dual 296 mm discs with Nissin radial-mount calipers, four-piston in Honda's press releases and Honda UK's spec table but two-piston in Honda US spec sheets. Nothing crosses between the two eras.
Honda CBR650R
Radial-mount Nissin four-piston calipers on 310 mm floating discs, with a single-piston caliper on a 240 mm rear disc (Honda US spec). EBC lists Double-H sintered front pads for 2019–2024.
Kawasaki Ninja 650
Dual 300 mm petal discs with 2-piston calipers. EBC lists sintered HH pads for 2017–22; add braided lines and fresh fluid.
Suzuki GSX-8R
Nissin radial-mount four-piston calipers on twin 310 mm discs, and a 240 mm rear disc with a single-piston Nissin caliper; ABS (Suzuki). The 8S has the same brakes. Spiegler lists brake-line kits for the 8R 2024.
Suzuki SV650
Pads, braided lines and fluid carry the stock calipers surprisingly far at club pace. Gen 1/2 front masters are frequent upgrade targets on race builds — often with donor GSX-R hardware (community-reported).
Triumph Daytona 660
Four-piston radial calipers on twin 310 mm floating discs. Triumph's 2026 spec lists braided lines. Pads and fluid are the first upgrade.
Yamaha R7
Stock hardware is genuinely good (Brembo radial MC, radial calipers). Consumables are the upgrade: track pads, braided lines, RBF-tier fluid.
Yamaha R9
Brembo Stylema monoblocks, a radial master cylinder and stainless lines come stock, so buy pads, fluid and a lever guard. Graves lists Galespeed rotors for the R1, R6 and R9.
Ducati Monster
Brembo M4.32 with a radial master stock — better than the class norm. Pads and fluid are the only track needs; Stylema envy is an SP upsell, not a requirement.
Ducati Streetfighter V4
Brembo Stylema stock. Pads, fluid, and braided lines by preference; the master cylinder is already excellent. Lever guard required for track days.
Honda CB500F
2013–2021: one 320 mm disc (petal-style from 2019) with a two-piston caliper. 2022+: dual 296 mm discs. Honda's 2022 US features release and its Europe releases (2022, and the 2024 CB500 Hornet) describe Nissin radial-mount four-piston calipers; Honda US spec sheets for 2022–2026 and the 2022 brochure table print two-piston. Check your calipers.
Honda CB650R
The radial four-piston front end is genuinely decent stock. Pads, braided lines and fresh fluid are all it needs for track days; save master-cylinder money for suspension.
Kawasaki Z650
Pads and braided lines are all the bike needs at street and trackday pace. EBC HH or Vesrah pads, Spiegler or Galfer lines — under $250 for the set.
Kawasaki Z900
SE models ship with Brembo M4.32 calipers and steel lines — the factory upgrade path. Base bikes get most of the way there with sintered pads, braided lines and fluid; a master-cylinder upgrade is the last step, not the first.
Suzuki GSX-8S
Nissin radial four-piston calipers on twin 310 mm discs, and a 240 mm rear disc with a Nissin single-piston caliper; ABS (Suzuki), the same as the 8R. Spiegler lists brake-line kits for the 8S 2023–2024.
Triumph Street Triple 765
RS ran Brembo M50s with an MCS master (2017–22) and moved to Stylemas in 2023; R uses M4.32s. All of them want pads, braided lines and fluid before any hardware talk.
Triumph Trident 660
Nissin two-piston sliding calipers on twin 310 mm discs every year. Triumph lists braided lines and a span-adjustable lever for 2026. Pads and fluid are the first upgrade; the Daytona 660's radial calipers are part of a different fork.
Yamaha MT-07
EBC HH pads and braided lines transform the stock axial setup on 2014–24 bikes. The 2025 redesign moves to radial four-piston calipers — a different parts list entirely.
Yamaha MT-09
847 bikes: pads, braided lines and a radial master cylinder swap (community-reported) transform a mushy stock setup. 2021+ came with a radial master; consumables still help.
KTM 390 Duke
ByBre (Brembo's Indian subsidiary) radial caliper and 320 mm disc from 2017 on. Sintered pads plus a braided line is the whole upgrade for track-day pace; the hardware itself is up to the job.
Kawasaki Ninja 300
Single 290 mm petal disc with a two-piston caliper; 220 mm petal rear disc with a two-piston caliper (Kawasaki). Spears lists a rear braided line and an EBC floating front rotor for 2013–2017. Check that a line kit lists your ABS version.
Kawasaki Ninja 400 & Ninja 500
Pads (Vesrah, EBC HH), one braided line and fluid — done for track duty at this weight. ABS models can't be switched off; racers typically build from non-ABS donors or pull the ABS fuse (community practice, check your org's rules).
Kawasaki Z400
One 310 mm petal disc and a 2-piston caliper. EBC lists sintered HH pads for the Z400 ABS (2018–21); add a braided line and fresh fluid. US Z400s are ABS-only, so check a brake kit lists the ABS model.
Yamaha MT-03
One 298 mm disc and a 2-piston caliper, the same as the R3. Sintered pads, a braided line and fresh fluid are the first round.
Yamaha R3
Single front disc means pads matter disproportionately. Sintered pads, a braided line and fresh fluid are the whole first round; leave the caliper alone.
