Why mod a GSX-8R
The GSX-8R shares its engine, frame, brakes and electronics with the GSX-8S, so most bolt-on parts are listed for both bikes. The Showa fork (the 8S has a KYB), the bars and the fairing-side parts are 8R-specific.
GSX-8R street mods, in order
Fit a fender eliminator
Yoshimura's V2 kit (with LED signals) lists the GSX-8S/8R 2023–2026, and Puig lists a kit for both bikes. TST's Elite-1 low-mount kit lists the 8S 2023 and 8R 2024; its high-mount kit lists only the 8S 2023.
Add protection
Woodcraft (frame sliders, axle sliders, stator and water-pump cover protectors), TST (frame sliders, water-pump cover protector) and Womet-Tech (fork sliders, bar ends) list the 8S/8R; GB Racing lists 8R covers for 2024–2026. TST lists 8S 2023 and 8R 2024 frame sliders as separate parts.
Fit levers, a screen and grips
ASV's F3 and C5 sport levers list the 8R 2024–2026 and 8S 2023–2026. Puig lists Z-Racing (2024) and R-Racer (2024–2025) windscreens for the 8R, and Zero Gravity lists a Double Bubble screen (2024). TechSpec lists Gripster tank grips for the 8S 2023 and 8R 2024.
Choose an exhaust by what it replaces
Suzuki puts the catalytic converter inside the mid-pipe; the exhaust then flows into an under-chassis chamber and a short right-side muffler. Akrapovič and Arrow list homologated systems that include a catalytic converter; Akrapovič's GP system, LeoVince's LV-14 R and Arrow's Competition EVO are listed as not street-legal. Yoshimura's AT2 full system is 6.5 lb lighter than stock (Yoshimura via TST).
Flash if you fit a full system
TST's WORX Performance ECU tune (mail-in) covers the 8R 2024–2026: it unrestricts the throttle valve in mode A and disables the O2, PAIR, front-wheel-speed and EVAP fault codes. TST labels it closed-course only and says it is written for aftermarket full systems; its Stage 2 and 3 tunes also need TST's intake or airbox.
Upgrade the suspension
Suzuki lists a cam-style preload adjuster on the shock and no fork adjusters. Öhlins lists a NIX30 Supersport cartridge kit for the 8R (Showa fork) and an STX 46 shock for both bikes; Bitubo lists an EBH cartridge kit for the 8R 2024–2026; TST sells Nitron's NTR R3 shock. Start with springs for your weight.
GSX-8R track build, in order
Buy tires in the stock sizes
Stock is Dunlop Roadsport 2 in 120/70ZR17 on a 17 × 3.5 in rim and 180/55ZR17 on a 17 × 5.5 in rim (Suzuki), so track tires in those sizes need no wheel change.
Refresh the brake consumables
The Nissin radial four-piston calipers and 310 mm discs stay. Add pads, fluid, a braided line (Spiegler lists brake lines for the 8R 2024) and a lever guard; R&G lists one for the GSX-8S.
Spring the suspension for your weight
Fit fork springs or a cartridge kit (Öhlins NIX30 Supersport, Bitubo EBH) and a shock (Öhlins STX 46, Nitron NTR R3) matched to your weight and pace.
Move the controls
Woodcraft lists complete rearsets for the 8S/8R in standard and GP shift that reuse the OEM quickshifter; Gilles Tooling lists AS31GT3 rearsets (2023–2024); TST lists riser brackets. Helibars lists handlebar risers for the 8R 2024–2025.
Prepare the bike for track use
Hotbodies lists GSX-8R 2024–2026 race bodywork, Woodcraft a Supersport kit plus individual fairing, tail, fender and seat-base parts, and Armour Bodies 8R bodywork. GB Racing lists 8R covers for 2024–2026.
Regear, then add a full system and flash
Stock is a 525 chain with a 17T front and 47T rear sprocket. Driven lists a 520 kit and Vortex a 520 aluminum rear sprocket for the 8S/8R 2023–2026. Pair a full system with the TST flash.
GSX-8R fitment by year (GSX-8R)
- GSX-8R2024–present
One hardware spec so far. Launched for 2024 on the GSX-8S platform with a full fairing, a Showa SFF-BP fork and Showa shock in place of the S's KYB units, forged aluminum separate handlebars and a 452 lb (205 kg) curb weight. Homologated for MotoAmerica Twins Cup in January 2024. Suzuki's 2025, 2026 and 2027 pages list the same suspension, brake and tire specs, so one parts search covers every year; the only year-specific item is the 2024 chain recall (NHTSA 24V-081).
GSX-8R gotchas — read before buying
GSX-8R parts interchange
Reported by riders; verify before buying. Full chart → See also: Suzuki GSX-8S.
- GSX-8S: frame, engine, brakes, wheels and electronics are shared, and Woodcraft rearsets, TST tune and protection, ASV levers, Yoshimura V2 and Öhlins' STX 46 all list both bikes. Fork internals, bars and fairing-side parts don't cross (vendor-listed and reviewer-reported).
- GSX-8T and GSX-8TT (2026): Suzuki lists them on the 8S family; Puig lists front axle sliders for the 8S, 8R and 8TT 2023–2026. Verify anything else per listing.
- V-Strom 800/800DE: GB Racing lists engine covers for the GSX-8R/S and V-Strom 800DE together, so engine-adjacent parts cross; chassis parts don't.
Suzuki GSX-8R mods FAQ
Do GSX-8S parts fit the GSX-8R?
Most bolt-on parts do: the bikes share engine, frame, brakes and electronics, and vendors list rearsets, shocks, protection, levers and tail tidies for both. The exceptions are the fork (Showa on the 8R, KYB on the 8S), the bars and fairing-side parts.
Does a GSX-8R exhaust need a tune?
Vendors disagree. Akrapovič's listed features say no remap is required, while TST says removing the stock exhaust makes the 8S/8R run lean and set fault codes and sells a flash for it. Suzuki's cat is in the mid-pipe, so check whether a listing replaces it.
Is the GSX-8R good for track days and racing?
Yes: MotoAmerica homologated the 8R for Twins Cup in January 2024, and vendors list race bodywork (Hotbodies, Woodcraft, Armour Bodies), rearsets and suspension for it. At 452 lb, tires, pads and suspension sprung for your weight come before any power part.
What recalls affect the GSX-8R?
One: NHTSA 24V-081, missing chain rivets on 360 bikes from the 2024 model year. Suzuki says all affected bikes were in its direct control, so no owner letters were sent; dealers inspect and repair the chain. Suzuki files the model as 'GSX800' at NHTSA, so search by VIN.
Is the GSX-8R fork adjustable, and what should I upgrade first?
Suzuki lists no fork adjusters and a preload adjuster on the shock only. Start with springs for your weight, then an Öhlins NIX30 Supersport or Bitubo EBH cartridge kit and a shock such as the Öhlins STX 46.
